Phillies Make Big Moves at Deadline

Coming into the deadline on a five-game winning streak, the Phillies were a significant player late in the day on Tuesday. The team is just one game ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals in the wild card race and was looking to tie up loose ends before a potential playoff run.

Sosa Joins The Team

The Phillies tied up loose ends, that’s for sure. The Phillies made some significant moves in the final minutes before the deadline. The first trade for the Phillies happened on July 30th. The St. Louis Cardinals traded 2B Edmundo Sosa to Philadelphia for Left-Handed-Reliever JoJo Romero. Sosa, batting just .189 on the season, will be a bench player for the Phillies.

Familia and Herrera DFA

Tuesday, August 2nd, the Phillies set things in motion. The team started the day by designating CF Odubel Herrera and RHP Jeurys Familia for assignment. Familia has a 6.09 ERA on the season but a 12.71 ERA in his last seven games. Herrera batted .222 in his previous seven games with a .238 season average. Sending those players to the minors opened up roster spots for the newly acquired players.

LAA and PHL Agree On Deals

Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Angels were in talks all day. The first trade came with OF Brandon Marsh to Philadelphia in exchange for #3 Prospect, C Logan O’Hoppe. They also traded right-handed starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard to Philadelphia in exchange for CF Mickey Moniak and RF Jadiel Sanchez. Marsh comes batting .226 on the season with an OPS of .637. Syndergaard comes with a 3.83 ERA and 5-8 record on his season.

CHC Trades RHP Robertson

The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia had an even exchange. The Phillies sent RHP Ben Brown for right-handed reliever David Robertson. Robertson previously pitched for Philadelphia but was injured for most of his time on the team. Robertson comes with a 3-0 record and a 2.23 ERA.

Injury Update on Segura and Harper

Jean Segura is scheduled to be back Thursday after being on the injured list for a broken hand. Bryce Harper is beginning his rehab soon. With the new Phillies and the current roster, there is hope to make it to the postseason!
