Injuries & Magic Numbers: The Phillies’ Road to the Playoffs

As we gear up for the hunt for Red October, where do the Phillies stand in their quest for a playoff spot?

First, let’s discuss the revolving door of injuries the Phillies seem to have acquired.

  • Austin Hays—Hays is on the 10-day IL with a kidney infection. He was placed on the IL retroactive to 9/2/24. As long as all goes well, we should see him back on the roster on 9/13 against the Mets. Cal Stevenson was recalled from AAA to fill his spot on the roster.

  • Alec Bohm - The Phillies tried just resting Bohm, but it’s clear he needs a little bit of an IL stint. He was placed on the list retroactive to 9/3/24, and we hopefully will see him back on the roster on 9/13 against the Mets. Buddy Kennedy was recalled from AAA to fill his spot on the roster.

  • J.T. Realmuto - while Realmuto isn’t on the IL, he is out of the lineup with a sore left knee/bruise. The club brought up Aramis Garcia to provide backup to Stubbs, and Nick Nelson was Designated for Assignment. Realmuto & the Phillies are confident he will not need any IL time, just another day or two off.

  • Edmundo Sosa - Sosa is the latest player to join the IL team. Placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Sept. 7, Sosa has back spasms. Seth Johnson was recalled from Triple AAA to start Sunday’s game and take Sosa’s roster spot.

Now, let’s discuss the magic numbers. A magic number is basically a number that represents a combination of wins for the leader and losses for the contender in a pennant race. Here’s where we stand, with all results as of Sept. 7 at 11:59pm.

The Phillies’ magic number to clinch a postseason berth is 13.

The Phillies’ magic number to clinch the National League East is 14.

The Phillies’ magic number to clinch a bye to the Division Series is 18.

Remaining Schedule:

1 @ MIA   (.373)

3 v. TB    (.497)

3 v. NYM (.549)

3 @ MIL (.577)

4 @ NYM (.549)

3 v. CHC (.507)

3 @ WSH (.451)

September baseball is always fun to watch, and the Phillies are hungry for more playoff action. We’re done with the pesky Braves and have a relatively easier schedule heading into playoff contention.

As always, go Phils!

PS: hopefully stay tuned for a recap of Tuesday’s game vs. TB, as I’ll be attending that game
